Michael A. Tompkins, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist (PSY 13822), a founding partner of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Tompkins specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression in adults, adolescents and children. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles and chapters on cognitive-behavior therapy and related topics, including the following books: My Anxious Mind: A Teen's Guide to Managing Anxiety and Panic (with Katherine Martinez) (Magination Press/American Psychological Association, 2009); Digging Out: Helping Your Loved One Manage Cutter, Hoarding, and Compulsive Acquiring (with Tamara L. Hartl) (New Harbinger, 2009); Using Homework in Psychotherapy: Strategies, Guidelines, and Forms (Guilford, 2004), and a book and videotape series (with Jacqueline B. Persons and Joan Davidson), Essential Components of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Depression (American Psychological Association, 2001). Currently, he is at work on the following books: Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Youth: A Step-by-Step Guide to be published by the American Psychological Association; and Clinician's Guide to Managing Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding: A Harm Reduction Approach (with Tamara L. Hartl) to be published by Springer. Dr. Tompkins is a recipient of the 1994 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award by the California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco awarded and the 2005-2006 Distinguished Instructor Award, University of California Berkeley Extension. He has presented nationally on the topic of cognitive-behavior therapy.
